About

About St Wilfrid’s

The church of St Wilfrid’s is located in Barrow upon Trent, a small village in South Derbyshire. It’s not known exactly how long the church has been standing in the village but latest research suggests it dates back to Anglo Saxon times, and may be 1200 years old.

The Friends of St Wilfrid’s

The Friends of St Wilfrid’s are a group of volunteers who live in the parish and have worked to preserve the history of the church and ensure it can be enjoyed by many future generations. In 2019 they secured a grant from Heritage Lottery Fund to transform the space, to discover more about its history and to fund future activities and events.

The story so far

2012 – The Barrow on Trent Parish Plan history group was awarded a grant by the Heritage Lottery fund to research the history of the village including the church which lead to many fascinating discoveries.

2014 – 2017 – Bids were made for further investment from the Heritage Lottery fund to allow the preservation of the future of the church and create a space that can be used by all the community.

2019 – St Wilfrid’s are awarded the grant meaning the first phase of the project can begin.

2020 – Building work begins and the church is transformed with new heating, lighting and flooring and many exciting historical discoveries are made and preserved within the building.

What’s next?

In addition to being a beautiful place of worship, we want the space to be a hub for the community and enjoyed by all. From Spring onwards there will be regular events and activities taking place that cover a broad range of interests. From those for history lovers, those with an interest in churches and their architecture, and educational activities and fun events for families. Plus, the space can be hired by individuals for their own event use.
